For those looking for local to international news, one of the main places that they look in Syracuse is in the Post-Standard Newspaper. This is a daily paper that has a great combination of stories involving everything from global conflicts to a new cooling water treatment chemical being used throughout America and has commentary by local residents on all of the important issues. It is also now an affiliate of the website Syracuse.com and between these sources you will definitely find out about everything news worthy that you might be curious to know.
This newspaper started as the Onondaga Standard in 1829 and later became the Syracuse Standard about fifty years later. By 1900 it had merged with the Syracuse Post and started using the name that it has today. In that year it already had a circulation of more than 135,000 residents and was toted as the "clean, aggressive, wholesome, up-to-date" choice for the area. At one time this publication had the largest circulation of any newspaper in Greater New York and Rochester. This was long before people were reading about Toronto SEO marketing and global politics seconds after the story happened.
Through the middle part of the 20th century the Post-Standard was owned by Samuel I Newhouse, who also owned the Herald-Journal and the Herald America. These three publications co-existed for some time with the Post-Standard as the morning paper, the Herald-Journal coming out in the afternoon and the Herald America in the evening. Eventually this was reduced to just the Post-Standard existing by 2001. They currently operate seven news bureaus throughout the region and in Albany and Washington DC so that they are able to cover everything from a finance story dealing with private mortgage lenders to issues relating to the environment.
In past year the Post-Standard has been named as one of the best newspapers in the country even though it's circulation is now fewer than 100,000 subscribers. But you will find that if you want to know about a local team that beat a hockey school Canada based or things that are currently happening in federal government than you will be hard pressed to find a better local source.
If you're a fan of advancing technology than you do not have to leave the Post-Standard behind. All of the stories that are printed in the physical edition of the newspaper are also available online, as well as additional information about current events where you can win a car Canada or Detroit made or about a recent town meeting. You will also find interactive tools on the website where you can discuss editorial topics or even post some of your own pictures and stories of life here in Syracuse.
